Authentic Nicaraguan double hammock 100% cotton
Declared a national park in the early 1980s, the Zapatera archipelago is the second largest island in Lake Nicaragua after Ometepe. The island's abundant vegetation is home to a wealth of wildlife (toucans, parrots, kingfishers, falcons) and mammals (ocelots, jaguars, armadillos, deer), in addition to an impressive collection of pre-Columbian statues.
Hammock XL " Zapatera ": A double hammock for 1-2 people
In Nicaraguan tradition, the hammock is much more than just a piece of garden furniture. It's a way of life, an object of pride, a symbol of culture. And our XL "Zapatera" Multicolor Nicaraguan hammock is one of the finest examples of this.
The traditional Nicaraguan hammock: A cotton hammock
With a width of 1.75 meters, a sleeping length of 2.5 meters and a total length of 4 meters, this hammock is larger in every way than any industrial hammock on the market. It's also extendable and can open up to 2 meters. This makes it easy to transport and perfect for relaxing, reading or even as an alternative to bed. However, if your aim is to spend your nights in a hammock, we recommend you take a look at our XXL hammocks from Colombia or Wayuu hammocks. They are among the most comfortable and largest hammocks in the world.
Nicaraguan craftsmanship
This XL hammock is handmade in Masaya, a town in central Nicaragua. This town is considered the heart of the country's hammock production. Local craftsmen use 100% recycled cotton to create a special twisting technique that offers a pleasantly relaxing experience.
The body of the hammock is hand-woven at home using two poles known as looms. The extra-thick ropes guarantee long-lasting use, so that this hammock will be by your side for many years to come. (Below, a video showing the first stage of manufacture).
The traditional design of the Nicaraguan hammock is also a key element of its charm. With their wooden ornaments and pretty fringe, these hammocks add a touch of rustic beauty to any living space. The bright, bold color combination of our XL "Zapatera" hammock also makes it a perfect choice for lovers of bold decorating. To create a unique, colorful corner, combine it with our our "Masatepe" XL chair hammock.
An ethical and responsible choice
The traditional Nicaraguan hammock is much more than just a piece of furniture. It's a testimony to the country's craftsmanship, culture and history. It embodies the traditions of the local community, their craft expertise and their love for the art of hammocking.

The XL hammock is good for kids
Swinging and playing in a hammock is great sensory therapy for children. It stimulates the senses, soothes the mind and triggers hormone secretion, promoting the release of endorphins. It also contributes to the development of the vestibular system, which plays an essential role in balance, motor coordination and the perception of their own body. Some hospitals even incorporate mini-hammocks to provide a comforting cocoon for premature babies: The success of hammocks for premature babies in Latin America.
In Nicaragua, before weaving the hammock, the cotton thread is stretched over several dozen meters. A wooden wheel is used to turn the thread on itself, making it more resistant.
